Every year, GABS puts the call out to the industry to create something special for GABS Beer, Cider & Food Fest. In 2018, over 90 different brewers and cidermakers around New Zealand and Australia have answered that call and created something special just for you. For those brewers, it’s an opportunity to be creative, to push boundaries, and to showcase their talents. These beers and ciders are unique, limited release, and exclusive in every sense. DO. NOT. MISS. THEM.
Please note that there is a limited allocation of each Festival Beer & Cider for each session. Some session allocations may run out but the beer or cider will be back for the next session. The moral of the story is… if there’s something you absolutely want to try, try it first.
3 RAVENS (AUS) MOUSSEY JUICY 6% New England IPA
They say they took a 'textbook NE IPA' (there's an NE IPA text book?) and added chocolate, vanilla, lactose, pectin and roasted malt. Creamy dessert-like and plenty of hops. Doing things by their own book.
7 CENT BREWERY (AUS) QUIET B4 THE STORM 8.5% Belgian Quad
Boom! The storm is coming in this Belgian Quad with deep states of flavour in every drop. 7 Cent has aged this in ex-American Bourbon barrels with a blend of secret herbs and spices.
8 WIRED BREWING (AUK) STONE FREE 4.4% Soured Fruit Beer
When 8 Wired does fruited sours, it's always a good idea to pay attention. This Hendrix inspired Kettle Sour is fermented on apricots and has a lovely dose of Riwaka hops.
AETHER BREWING (AUS) SMOKED CHERRY DOUBLE CHOC BROWNIE STOUT 8% Sweet Stout
Cherries roasted over old Jack Daniels barrels, marshmallow, cocoa nibs, and new American Oak staves have been added to give this Stout an intense desert boost, with hints of smoke and vanilla laced bitterness.
AKASHA BREWING COMPANY (AUS) THE EAGLE IIIIPA 12% American IPA
Akasha is a brewery well known for its big, hoppy West Coast IPAs. This is its biggest yet and at 12% they are calling it a 'quadruple' IPA. Explosions of tropical fruit and citrus.
ALIBI BREWING COMPANY (AUK) IT'S A MAD MAD MAD MAD WORLD 6.2% American Stout
With a Stout base, Alibi added dark muscovado sugar, oranges, and a sugar orange reduction; before ageing it all in bourbon barrels. It's an Old Fashioned, in beer form.
ALTITUDE BREWING (OTA) IK BEN GRUIT - CHARDONNAY BARREL-AGED BELGIAN GRUIT 7.5% Spice, Herb, or Vegetable Beer
Gruit is used to descibe beer flavoured with a spice and herb blend, rather than hops. For their version, Altitude has used juniper, lavender and cherrry bark. Floral nose, with a dry chardonnay-style finish.
AUSTRALIAN BREWERY (AUS) IT'S THE WAY IT SHATTERS THAT MATTERS 6% Brown Ale (UK-style)
A tribute to the Violet Crumble, the brewery has used honey, caramel and lactose. The underlying Brown Ale gives it a chocolate base, while the rest of the ingredients help recreate the Aussie classic.
B.EFFECT BREWING CO (OTA) DOUBLE DROP CENTRAL OTAGO IIPA 8.2% IPA (Specialty)
A clean malt base lets this double drop of NZ and German hops shine. A combination of wine and ale yeast means a lovely, unique, ferment to round it all out. Expect berry, citrus and tropical fruit flavours.
BACH BREWING (AUK) VELVET MARLEY 6.5% Specialty Beer
The gang at Bach didn't give us a lot of info about this one, but they tell us to think "chocolate, cocount, red berries and cream". The inspiration comes from devouring Cherry Ripe chocolate bars.
BAD SHEPHERD BREWING CO (AUS) CITRUS N CEDAR 6.5% American IPA
Mash hops, hop oil, whole cones, lupulin powder, fermentation hops, dry hops, AND aged on Cedar. If you don't know what that means, just know it'll be crammed with flavour, bitterness and an extra hit of citrus from grapefruit and orange zest.
BEERFARM / ROCKY RIDGE BREWING CO (AUS) RHUBARBARIAN 5% Kettle Sour
A beer on the darker side of sours; blood lime, dark and bitter chocolate and an extra sour hit from rhubarb wrenched screaming from the Beerfarm garden. Wrapped in a devilishly smooth nitro blanket.
BEHEMOTH BREWING CO (AUK) MOCHA MADNESS 8% Russian Imperial Stout
Cold brew coffee, Dutch cocoa powder and a seriously dark beer that is surprisingly smooth and silky as a result of oats and lactose sugar.
BLACK HOPS BREWING (AUS) GETTING TROLLEY'D IN TIJUANA 6.5% Saison/Farmhouse Ale
A late night spice run to Tijuana (possibly involving a trolley journey keeping them out of strife) has resulted in a cinnamon, orange peel and star anise ‘Sangria Saison’ liberally dosed with red wine.
BLACKMAN'S BREWERY (AUS) ESCARGOSE 4.8% Gose
Perhaps one of the most unusual beers to grace GABS, the team at Blackman’s Brewery in Torquay have crafted a dry-hopped Gose style beer with Great Ocean Road snails, parsley, thyme and pine nuts. Will you ‘Gose’ there?
BOOTLEG BREWERY (WKO) APEHANGER IPA GRRRR'APEFRUIT 6.3% American IPA
Bootleg won a NZ Brewers Guild Trophy for their aggressive American-style IPA, Apehanger. Now the team have remixed it with grapefruit. The result is a balance of tartness with piney hops.
BOUNDARY ROAD BREWERY (AUK) OVERHEAD SALTED XPA 5.2% Experimental Beer
Sea salt from the Southern Ocean is added to this to create a unique take on XPA. Expect citrus aroma, a little toffee malt flavour and a hint of salt to complement the bitterness.
BRIDGE ROAD BREWERS (AUS) RACER 'RED BULL IPA' 6% American IPA
This IPA has been made with an addition of half a pallet of imported Thai Red Bull (you know, the good stuff with the gold label). Good luck getting to sleep after this one.
BRIGHT BREWERY (AUS) BAM-BA-LAM 7% Saison/Farmhouse Ale
In this unique take on a classic farmhouse-style ale, they've made a black version of the typically light Saison, and dosed it with a hit of locally sourced lavender.
BROTHERS BEER (AUK) LAKSA ALE 4.7% Experimental Beer
This is an homage to the classic Asian laksa. Rich, full bodied ale with flavours of fresh coconut, lemongrass, lime, ginger and coriander.
CHAOTIC HOP BREWING (AUK) DRIPA 7.3% Red IPA
With 100% Kiwi ingredients, this is a big beer. Big juicy red malts, big hoppy flavours and big bitterness. Balanced, with a hint of spice.
COLONIAL BREWING CO (AUS) VIOLENT RUMBLE 8% American Amber Ale
Bertie Beetles, a Violet Crumble byproduct, were first made in the building that houses Colonial's Melbourne brewery. In honour, they've added them right into the beer, with chocolate, honey and rum. Get ready to rumble.
CONCEPT BREWING (CAN) TWISTED POLARITY 5.8% Saison/Farmhouse Ale
Described as an ’NZ Farmhouse Pale Ale’, this beer was hopped late with Sauvin, Pacifica and Taiheke hops along with Concept’s house strain farmhouse yeast to throw in some funky esters.
THE CRAFT & CO (AUS) JUNIIPA 9% Double IPA
Forget G & T. This is a G & B. As one of Australia’s only brewer distillers, Craft & Co have combined both to create a Double IPA brewed with resinous hops, gin botanicals, and a dash of Collingwood Dry Gin.
DAINTON BREWERY (AUS) SKITTLEBRAU 7% New England IPA
Life can be ‘all beer and skittles’ when it comes to GABS. This combines sweet juiciness of a New England IPA, with actual Skittles and a big whack of cherries. Drink the rainbow!
DEEDS BREWING (AUS) QUIET DEEDS BLURRED VINES 8.5% New England IPA
Yeah ok, there are a few New England IPAs in this list, but this is the only one with Sav Blanc juice added mid-fermentation. Low bitterness, white wine flavours, and a creamy soft finish. We know you want it.
DEEP CREEK BREWING CO (AUK) STEAM FUNK ‘STONEFRUIT BERLINER’ 4.5% Berliner Weisse
A Berliner Weisse that's full of Kiwi summer fruit - nectarines, peaches and apricots. Expect layers of sweet fruit and a lovely tart finish.
DEVILS BREWERY (AUS) COROLLA 5% New World Pilsener
With influence from that famous Mexican lager (you know the one), Devils Brewery has made an easy drinking pale lager and dosed it with local Tassie hops and a bunch of lemon zest.
EPIC BREWING COMPANY (AUK) BEER BLANKET 6% Foreign Extra Stout
You know that warm and fuzzy feeling you get after a few beers, especially when it’s cold outside, and you didn’t bring a jacket? Like you’re invincible to the cold. Beware the false warmth of the ‘beer blanket’. Stay inside and enjoy responsibly.
FERAL BREWING COMPANY (AUS) SHOOTER MCGAVIN'S BREAKFAST IPA 7% New England IPA
With Weet-Bix, Frosted Flakes, Froot Loops, All Bran, Nutri-Grain, and Cornflakes, this is a true breakfast juice. It smells like tropical fruit, looks like orange juice, tastes like sweet cereal, and is sure to get your day started just right.
FOREIGNER BREWING COMPANY (AUS) DURIAN DURIAN 4.2% Saison/Farmhouse Ale
Durian - a fruit so controversial it's banned in some hotels and by public transport providers in southeast Asia. Foreigner believe it's a bit misunderstood and here it adds a tropical fruit character to funky Saison.
FORTUNE FAVOURS (WGN) THE MARQUÊS 8% Porter
Inspired by The Marquess of Pombal (who demarcated Portugal’s Douro wine region as the home of all Port fortified wine), this Ruby Porter has been infused with both Portuguese Port and Australian ‘Port' before being aged in oak.
FOUNDERS (NSN) 2018 PILSNER 5.5% New World Pilsener
Are you stinging for some kiwi hops? You'll find no better base for them than a classic Pilsner. A sharp, crackling beer underneath gorgeous bright citrus and white wine aroma.
FUNK ESTATE (BOP) TANG TOWN: TURBO SHANDY 5.9% Kettle Sour
Funk Estate describe this as a 'turbo version of classic shandy in sour beer form'. The beer has been kettle soured and crammed with lemon. It's a shandy but bigger, more tart and lemony AF.
GARAGE PROJECT (WGN) OMG THAT'S THE FUNKY SHIT! 7.5% New England IPA
Super hoppy and hazy IPA with Nelson and Galaxy hops, and a big old dose of blood orange, mango and grapefruit. OMG! Ah, we see what they did there.
GOOD GEORGE BREWING (WKO) EAST COAST IPA 6.7% New England IPA
A tropical fruit salad of a beer, with the hops giving all sorts of intense flavour including pineapple, passionfruit and mango. Hazy, golden, and yummy.
GREEN BEACON BREWING CO (AUS) PARFAIT IPA WITH PASSIONFRUIT & GUAVA 7% IPA (Specialty)
With vanilla and lactose, this is inspired by Parfait desserts. The guava and passionfruit accent the hops, and the result is a creamy, sweet, delicious IPA.
HALLERTAU BREWERY (AUK) ACID HAUS 5% Dry Hopped Sour
The brewery describes this as having a 'potent pink grapefruit and lime rind' aroma. It's kettle soured, and is packed full of fruit and citrus flavours. Thirst quenchingly tart.
HAWKERS BEER (AUS) / WHEATY BREWING CORPS (AUS) / LIBERTY BREWING CO (AUK) FRAMBOISE A TROIS 6.5% Soured Fruit Beer
A trans-Tasman collaboration between three of Australia and New Zealand’s most loved breweries has produced this delicious sour raspberry IPA, with a touch of lactose for a bit of je ne sais quoi.
HEYDAY BEER CO (WGN) SARONNO STOUT 7% Sweet Stout
With a Sweet Stout base, Heyday have incorporated the flavours of Amaretto which is a sweet Italian liqueur made from apricot pits and almonds. A gorgeous take on two classic drinks.
HOLGATE BREWHOUSE (AUS) NELSON'S VICTORY 7.5% Specialty Beer
Brewed to give courage and inspire a victorious outcome to all those overwhelmed by choice. It's also infused with rum soaked oak from the Lark Distillery. Rum AND inspiration? What more do you need?
HOP NATION (AUS) BRETT GOLD 6% Mixed-Fermentation Sour Beer
Hop Nation’s winemaking background comes to the fore here with this kettle soured Blonde Ale that has been fermented and aged on French oak for five months.
HORSEBOX BREWING (NSN) #NOCRYSTAL 5.5% American Pale Ale
Juicy and aromatic without crystal malt, which the brewers describe here as 'stocking filler'. If you are unsure what that means, just know that this is a tasty, easy drinking beer that won't be too sweet.
INVERCARGILL BREWERY (STL) THE PARSONS NOSE 7% Spice, Herb, or Vegetable Beer
Using local Southland parsnips, Invercargill has created a parsnip Saison. One of their employees has wanted to brew one for years and now's your chance to taste it.
KERERU BREWING COMPANY (WGN) HOLY COW! 6.5% Specialty Beer
A malty ale that has been infused with dates and pomegranate. It was inspired by an ancient Egyptian beer recipe and Hathor, goddess of cows, love, hospitality and (of course), beer.
LAKEMAN BREWING (WKO) HAIRY WONKER 13% Russian Imperial Stout
With coffee from Volcanic Roasters, and chocolate from Huka Falls Chocolate; plus vanilla and almond, this is probably the beer Willy Wonka would have made.
LAUGHING BONES BREWING CO (AUK) PEPPERTREE SAISON 5.5% Saison/Farmhouse Ale
Foraged horopito and kawakawa, two NZ herbs from the peppertree family, and a dash of naturtium leaf make this a herbacious nod to classic farmhouse beers. Spicy, dry, and bright.
LITTLE CREATURES (AUS) DAWN TIL D’HUSK 7% Schwarzbier
This big, dark number has been brewed in collaboration with Perth chocolatier Sue Lewis. It uses cocoa husks (a byproduct of chocolate production), to marry complex chocolate aromas with the cleansing nature of a Lager.
LUMBERJACK BREWING (BOP) WIDOW MAKER 11% IPA (Specialty)
This is all about hops... and hops... and more hops. They tell us there are enough that it'll feel like a log to the head, and we assumed that was meant to be a good thing.
MAC'S BEER (AUK) PRESSURE DROP 6.2% American IPA
This is equal parts bitter and hazy IPA. Expect a cloudy appearance and burnt orange colour. Large additions of whirlpool and dry hops mean it's loaded with fruit flavour; but still a solid bitterness at the back.
MCCASHIN'S BREWERY (NSN) STOKE CHOCOLATE ICECREAM STOUT 4.5% Sweet Stout
The brewers at McCashin's have been getting creative and invented their very own creamy chocolate Stout. They describe this one as 'liquid ice cream'.
MCLEOD'S BREWERY (NTL) CAPE BRETT SAISON 6.3% Saison/Farmhouse Ale
A red Saison base beer has been dosed up with McLeod's house culture of souring bacteria and wild yeast. It has soft tartness, sweet malt and lingering tart finish.
MIKE'S BEER (TKI) BELGIAN HONEY TRIPLE 11% Belgian Tripel
Kamahi honey is one of New Zealand's best kept honey secrets. It has a rich, complex flavour and is great in a strong golden Belgian style ale such as this.
MISMATCH BREWING CO (AUS) STRAWBERRY & VANILLA TART 4.8% Kettle Sour
Fresh local strawberry, vanilla, lactose and a sour base beer combine to create a smoothie-like appearance and tart juicy flavour.
MOON DOG CRAFT BREWERY (AUS) CHERRY PIE A LA MODE 8.2% Specialty Beer
Using a secret method to extract the flavour from vanilla bean ice cream, Moon Dog has produced a bright red cherry and ice cream infused dessert beer.
MORRISON BREWERY (AUS) UMAMI 5% Brown Ale (UK-style)
This Brown Ale has miso, sesame, soy, spring onions and seaweed added. It's the third in their Asian-food inspired GABS beers, after their Hot & Sour and Green Curry Saison.
MOUNT BREWING CO (BOP) SS RENA 7% Irish-style Dry Stout
A Stout that could sink your ship, or float your boat. In memory of summer ruined by the Rena oil spill, this is flavoured with cherry, vanilla and kola nuts. Served on nitrogen for that extra thick slickness.
MOUNTAIN GOAT BEER (AUS) NITRO BURNIN' FUNNY CARS 17% Specialty Beer
Sunday! Sunday! Sunday! At the Citrus Bowl off US-30!! Shake hands with the devil as you scream through the burning gates of hell with this whisky infused, barrel aged, chipotle spiced, nitrogen fuelled Imperial Stout.
MYTHICA BREWING (AUK) MINTHE CHOCOLATE PEPPERMINT STOUT 6% Sweet Stout
The story goes that Greek nymph Minthe was caught flirting with Hades by Hades' wife Persephone. As punishment, Persephone turned Minthe into a mint plant. As tribute to Minthe, Mythica have made a chocolate Stout infused with two types of mint, and a blend of spice.
NEW ENGLAND BREWING CO (AUS) DUBBEL BUBBEL 6% Belgian Dubbel
Belgian beers often have a bubblegum character from their unique strains of yeast. New England have run with that concept and simply added bubblegum directly into the beer. Don’t worry, you can swallow this one.
NORTH END BREWERY (WGN) SAISON DU NECTAR 5% Saison/Farmhouse Ale
Nectar is derived from "nektar" in Greek - aka the drink of the gods. This uses a Saison base, soured with yoghurt culture, boiled with dried mango, and conditioned on peaches. Oh lord(s).
OUTLIER CARTEL (AUK) CLOUDBURST 8.5% Double IPA
Outlier's take on a summer fruit smoothie. It's a double IPA, that's double dry hopped on an oat base with lactose for a creamy experience.
PACT BEER CO (ACT) NOMIHODAI 5.2% Specialty Beer
Organic black rice lends dark colour and light body while salty Tasmanian seaweed brings a moreish character. Even with Japanese buckwheat and purple barley, this still is a Lager at heart, but is taken into delicious and almost culinary directions thanks to the seaweed umami.
PANHEAD (WGN) BATCH 23 BANANA ICE CREAM NITRO IPA 7% IPA (Specialty)
Banana, vanilla and good old Upper Hutt sweat have gone into this concoction. Served on nitro, it's as though someone blitzed a banana split right into your glass.
PIHA BEER (AUK) HANGI BEER 6% Rauchbier
Gather the whanau, some hāngi stones, and wet sacks before you enjoy this take on classic Kiwi kai. Smoked kumara, pumpkin and potato have been added to this one. Pork and puha optional.
PIKES BEER COMPANY (AUS) CHOC HAZELNUT PORTER 5.7% Porter
We all love Nutella, so of course we want to try it in beer form. The brewery has used a large portion of chocolate malt, cacao nibs, and a charge of hazelnut once it finished fermenting.
PINK BOOTS NEW ZEALAND (AUK) B.A.B.E. 6.7% Black IPA
Using a special hop blend, designed specifically for Pink Boots, this is a Black IPA that has also been given a bourbon barrel treatment. Brewed by a collective of women to celebrate International Women's Day.
PIRATE LIFE BREWING (AUS) BIONDA DEL MONTENEGRO 9% Belgian Blond Ale
Pirate Life's favourite digestif after a crew meal, Amaro Montenegro is a powerhouse of 40 different botanicals. The team have selected their favourite handful to spice a robust Belgian Blonde Ale, along with a copious splurge of 'the Real McCoy'.
RED DUCK BEER (AUS) SACHER TORTE 5.8% Sweet Stout
Served on nitrogen, this is a chocolate lovers dream. Creamy layers of rich chocolate, followed by chocolate. There's a hint of apricot whisky jam (author's note: what is that? We need it), and then more chocolate.
SAILORS GRAVE BREWING (AUS) WILD STRAWBERRIES 4.8% Specialty Beer
Beer is pretty fun, but wouldn't you rather go pick some of those... WILD, STRAWBERRIES? To the strains of the PNAU banger, Sailors Grave did just that. Sour, funky and full of foraged strawberry.
SHIFTY LIZARD BREWING (AUS) LIZARD’S DINNER 4.5% Ordinary Bitter
Looking for more protein in your beer? Infusing ground edible crickets (as loved by most lizards), this well rounded Bitter is the perfect side dish to any meal.
SOBA NZ HOMEBREWER OF THE YEAR (OTA) WHITE WIZARD 5.2% Spice, Herb, or Vegetable Beer
In 2017, Murray McCulloch won Champion Brewer at the SOBA (Society of Beer Advocates) National Homebrew Competition, which in addition to the medals, won him a Festival Beer tap at GABS! This is his rhubarb infused what beer. Easy drinking and delicious.
STOMPING GROUND BREWING CO (AUS) ORANGE MOCHA FRAPPUCCINO 6% Cream Ale
Is there more to life than drinking really, really, ridiculously good beer? Made with the finest English malts, Australian navel orange juice and rind, chocolate nibs and Proud Mary coffee, this one’s sure to wake you up before you go-go.
TUATARA BREWING CO (WGN) WHITE WALKER 6% White IPA
Witbier meets IPA. Belgium meets American. It's a blend of big bold US hops, and the lively spice of Belgian yeast. Expect tropical fruits and bubblegum aroma.
WHITE RABBIT (AUS) YUZU SANSHO 8.5% Belgian Tripel
Marrying a Belgian style with Japanese culture, this beer is brewed with toasted sesame seeds, Sansho peppers, Yuzu peel and served on nitro for a creamy mouthfeel.
WIGRAM BREWING COMPANY (CAN) SOUTHERN CROSS 5% Schwarzbier
Using the silky smooth base of German Schwarzbier (black lager), Wigram has taken the very un-German like approach and infused flavours of berry pancakes into this. Aromas of subtle vanilla and a gentle berry twang.
WOLF OF THE WILLOWS (AUS) TOM COLLINS SOUR 5.7% Kettle Sour
A double-Wolf collab that sees Wolf of the Willows joining forces with distillers, Patient Wolf. They've combined a tropical fruit driven sour beer with classic gin ingredients. An ode to the Tom Collins.
YULLI'S BREWS (AUS) 'ELTHAM' BOURBON BARREL AGED MAPLE PECAN BROWN ALE 7.5% Brown Ale (UK-style)
In collaboration with Eltham Pantry in Byron Bay, Yulli's have added maple coated pecans at several stages of the brewing process, then aged the beer in ex-Bourbon barrels. Well, we're excited.
CHEEKY GROG CO (AUS) CHEEKY PERRY 4.5% Specialty Perry
A medium sweet heritage perry cider that has a straw colour and a floral nose. Fermented in oak, expect a pear aroma with hints of quince. A multilayered palate with fruitiness followed by a balanced tannic finish.
DEVILS BREWERY (AUS) GRANDMA'S JAM CIDER 8% New World Cider
After finding a treasure trove of handmade Tasmanian jams in the back of their grandmother’s cupboard, the Devils Brewery team did what any self-respecting brewer would do: Make cider! Taste the love in every sip.
MCCASHIN'S BREWERY (NSN) ROCHDALE MOJITO CIDER 4% Cider with Fruit
Who doesn’t like a good mojito? The team have infused crisp apple cider with crushed mint and lime juice for that classic mojito mix.
PECKHAM'S CIDER (AUS) YARLINGTON MILL 6.6% Traditional Cider
With its slow, wild ferment of late picked bittersweet apples, Pechkam's liken this to a mature farmhouse cheese. It's all about wild yeast and fruit given time to do their thing.
SMALL ACRES CYDER (AUS) APRICOT BOMB 8.5% Cider with Fruit
Small Acres co-fermented apricots with apples, and even a few apricot crumble ingredients, in an old Pommeau (apple brandy) barrel. The result is a unique, full bodied, dry cider.
THREE WISE BIRDS CIDER (HKB) MORNING GLORY 6% Specialty Cider
Coffee is a common ingredient in beer, but ever had it in cider? This one is blended with cold brew coffee and served on nitro: like an espresso martini and cider hybrid. Yeah, you want to try this.
WILLIE SMITH'S CIDER (AUS) TANNINATOR 5.4% Traditional Cider
A big fat tannic cider that bursts with apple aroma, sweetness and a massive tannin finish. It's Willie Smith's nod to the hard core French tannic cider apples of the traditional ciders. #tannic
ZEFFER CIDER CO (AUK) BnB CIDER 5.2% New World Cider
The only cider here inspired by blues singer Blind Box Paxton. This blends blackberry, blackcurrant and blueberry with a crisp apple. Purple, not too sweet, and gorgeously drinkable.
